There are several methods of combating stress. These range from dietary control to time management. A very effective method is exercise and relaxation. Relaxation is a forgotten art. Few people know how to relax. For relaxation to be effective, we need to release tension from both body and mind. Yoga, Tai Chi and Chi Kung exercises are ideal for mind-body fitness. They encourage correct body posture, proper breathing techniques and a harmonious balance of physical and mental well-being. | ||
Yoga | ||
Yoga is a classical system of Indian philosophy. It is a holistic system dealing with our physical, psychological and spiritual needs. At the physical level, the postures and stretching exercises strengthen the body and create a feeling of well-being. Psychologically Yoga sharpens the intellect and aids concentration. It steadies the emotions and it gives hope. The breathing techniques calms the mind. Spiritually Yoga brings awareness and the ability to be still. Through meditation, inner peace is experienced and its philosophy sets life in perspective. | ||

Tai Chi is a form of exercises based on Chinese martial arts principles. It is thousands of years old and like Yoga, it is a holistic system which benefits both the body and mind. Chi Kung | ||
Chi Kung frequently goes hand-in-hand with Tai Chi. It is the practice of breathing correctly to promote good health. Many of us don't breathe properly and this is exacerbated in times of stress and tension. Bursts of rapid breathing accompanied by shortness of breath or tightness of the chest and throat are familiar symptoms of the fight or flight response. Correct breathing exercises and conscious relaxation are very important techniques to achieve a calm state of mind. | ||
